Under the Hood

Alex and I just had another story published with the Telegraph.  It’s a great look into the the soldier led anti war movement at the nucleus of the largest deployment base in the US, Fort Hood in Killeen Texas.  I’ve been really excited for this one to come out for a while.  Check out my favorite shots from the trip above then click here to read the full story.

Black Lips!

I shot a ton of portraits that I’m really excited about at the Fun Fun Fun Fest music festival this weekend.  Here is Cole Alexander from the Black Lips.  More outtakes on my tumblr account here.

29 Years on Death Row

I just finished a great story for Texas Monthly on Wayne East, a man who is soon to be released after spending 29 years in prison… most of them on death row.  The catch is that the victims cousin believes he is innocent and has fought and won to set him free.  You can read the full story by Mike Hall here.

Meet Zero Everybody!

Alex and I just finished a story for British GQ and a portion of it had us covering the New York Initiative, a self styled band of superheroes who patrol the streets in search of crime.  Zero is their leader, coordinator, armor maker, and one hell of a speed scout!  A special thanks to him for a great interview and photo shoot.

I still love you Phillip Morris

I’m trying desperately to update my website right now but things are crazy and busy over here.  Anyway, while sifting through some old pics I was caught off guard by this photo that I never noticed before.  This is an out take from the Esquire UK shoot of Steven Russel in preparation for the then upcoming movie I Love You Phillip Morris.  Jim Carrey plays Steven Russel in the film about a real life con man who finds true love behind prison walls and then escapes numerous times to be with his lover.  During the interview with Steven I was struck by how disarmingly nice and personable he was and I wanted a photo that conveyed that… what I missed when I was making selections is how sad the story is.  Phillip Morris, his lover, has disowned him for getting him into some serious trouble and he will never get out of prison after numerous charges of escape.  He is now housed in a super maximum security prison and has access to daylight only 1 hour a day even though he was never a violent offender.  In this frame, caught between smiles and shot through bullet proof glass, you can feel the weight and consequence of his decisions.  If you haven’t had a chance to see the movie check it out or view the trailer here.

Noodling Photos in NY Times Mag

A few years ago I started talking about my “top secret portrait project”.  My assistant Bill was the only one who knew I was planning on going to Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma to photograph the Okie Noodling Competition.  In fact we tried to go in 2010 but a last minute assignment came up and I had to cancel the trip.  This year it finally happened and I am proud to say that the New York Times Magazine has published a selection of the images in their “Look” section.  Mid next week I’ll post the official gallery on my site but for now you can see them online here on the NY Times site.  You can also go to their behind the scenes blog, The 6th Floor, to read my account of the trip as well as watch a video we stumbled upon taken at the contest where I make an appearance half way through while shooting some contestants.

No Age doesn’t need electricity

I first saw No Age play two years ago at SXSW.  They were one of a handful of bands that I needed to see and I was lucky enough to catch them playing a free show on the last night of the festival.  The crowd got out of hand and the event staff literally pulled the plug on the show mid song but it didn’t stop the band from finishing the set.  Dean still pounded away at the drums while shouting the lyrics and Randy finished the set playing a non-electric guitar.  It was out of hand and amazing and that is exactly the way I remember telling Dean my experience when I shot him at the US open last week while we geeked out over meeting Ed Templeton (photo to come).  If you haven’t heard them check them out now.

Robbie Russo rides skateboards better than you.

I just got back from a quick trip to CA and had the pleasure to shoot some portraits at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.  I was really excited to meet Robbie Russo who I have been watching shred pools and skate parks for awhile now.  Check out his portrait and watch a clip of him skating here.

Punk Rock Mineral Water

I just finished up a fun little job for Tribeza Magazine where I shot a feature on regulars at a few bars around town.  If you are in Austin pick up a copy and be sure to swing into the Jackalope (my new favorite place) for a cold drink and a healthy helping of punk rock with my new buddy Andrew.

Guantanamo Bay for Esquire UK

Still working on more web updates.  By the end of the week I should have a selection of published pics and outtakes from the Guantanamo Bay feature I did for Esquire UK awhile back.  For now enjoy this one… it pretty much sums up the theme of the trip.
